How this works

Hospitals in the United States must publish a machine-readable file listing what they charge. We read those files — hospital by hospital, not averaged up to the parent system — and put them behind one search box. Pick a procedure, set where you are and how far you will travel, choose how you intend to pay, and the nearby hospitals are ranked cheapest first.

Right now that covers 4,587 hospitals across 50 states, with 700,370 billable codes carrying at least one filed price.

What you can price

What it will not do

It will not tell you what you will be billed. A filed price is what the hospital published, not a quote — your plan, your deductible and what actually happens during care all move the final number. Where a hospital filed nothing for a code, the table says so instead of estimating. Prices are not a measure of quality of care.

Looking for what a procedure costs nationally rather than near you? The procedure price reports give the median, the spread and the state-by-state picture for thousands of codes. How every number is computed.
